Sterling was originally a heavy truck division of Ford. In 1997, the company was purchased and renamed. A subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America, Sterling Trucks, manufactures heavy duty trucks.
Daimler discontinued Sterling in order to consolidate its North American truck manufacturing under the Freightliner and Western Star brands. The Sterling plants were closed in 2009 and 2010.
