Water Trucks Serve a Unique Yet Vital Purpose
Water trucks are designed with a few specific purposes in mind. The first, and probably less common use for a water truck, is to bring potable water to those that are either too far from public water or utility company services, or those that live in areas that have an underdeveloped public water infrastructure. An example may be someone who lives in remote, backcountry property that isn't in an area that offers the ability to drill a well. Or, when water is needed in remote African villages that don't have an existing well water system, water trucks are frequently brought in to deliver this life-sustaining resource.
Water trucks are also heavily used in the construction and mining industries. Any activity involving the removal of earth or rock tends to create dust and debris. Water trucks are frequently sent in ahead of time to lay down a mist of dust-settling water. These trucks will also spray water during active mining or groundbreaking operations to ensure dust is kept to a minimum. New home construction sites are a common place to see these kinds of activities, as most localities have strict ordinances regarding the level of dust and airborne debris that can be stirred up from the jobsite.
Which Water Trucks are Popular Today?
Water trucks are available in a variety of capacities, but one of the most prolific makers of medium duty water trucks is Ford. Ford's range of water trucks -- from the venerable F350 to the ferocious F750, offer a host of features and design elements that makes them stand out from the crowd. A key benefit to choosing a Ford is the fact that you'll be able to choose an F-series model that matches your specific job requirements. F350 units are tried and true medium duty machines, while the F750 offers tremendous capability in an appropriately sized package.
Another major player in the water truck field is International. These trucks are truly heavy-duty, featuring massive frames, high-strength steel and iron chassis components, and high-capacity water tanks. Many of these units can carry 4,000 gallons of water or more (that's over 16 tons of water!) and are powered by large displacement diesel motors that offer the necessary torque to motivate nearly 20 tons of truck and cargo.
